Taye Olusola is a music producer, Mixing and mastering engineer, journalist, pianist amogst other great things. He graced HotTalkWithBlecyn to discuss the impact of music and explicit videos on children. Continue below to read my conversation with him.

Blecyn George Monsi: To what extent does song lyrics negatively impact the psychology and behavioral development of the youth?
Taye Olusola: A lot. Dress codes, disrespecting women and looking for easiest means to make money. Song lyrics can play a bad role in a youth’s life.
BGM: Is there a link between violent lyrics and violent behaviour?
Taye O: A lot of youths nowadays have been influenced violent lyrics causing them to have violent behaviors. Especially most of them joining street gangs, maltreating their girlfriends and wives. And a lot more
BGM: Do you think parents are the reason behind children’s act of listening to songs with explicit lyrics?
Taye O: Yes and No. Sometimes friends play an important role in that part. I guess Parents should stop children from listening to some genre of music especially hiphop.
BGM: Older siblings are one of the closest people who have the liberty to listen to any music of their choice, how can they help their younger ones to keep away from listening to explicit songs?
Taye O: Listening to gospel music. And making sure their younger one to watch Music Channels that promote trending music that can influence them.
BGM: Do you think sexualized lyrics in popular music have an impact on sexual behaviour and attitudes of adolescents?
Taye O: Yes I do, we see woman dance half naked in musical videos. And recording artist preach about sex and booty in musical videos. Most influenced men thinks women are prized commodities rather than life partner. So it promoted rape and attitudes of adolescents.
BGM: As a producer, will you ever turn down a job because of its explicit nature, if NO, why, if YES, why?
Taye O: Smiles. I want turn down such jobs and vice versa. It depends on the money that am getting paid. Men I need the cash (grins)
BGM: Practically speaking with focus on Nigeria, Musicians with more explicit content tend to have more waves than those whose lyrics are about a message for the people, why is this?
Taye O: Honestly speaking, beats are the ones trending now. Not lyrics. Also will a jobless man who hasn’t eaten all day listen to love songs when he listen to dance hall track to suppress his depression.
BGM: There is something I find very disturbing, why would schools invite Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne to give a speech? Why would brands focusing on kids invite Cynthia Morgan, Timaya, lil kesh, Wizkid to name a few to give a speech? What do you think about such scenario which continues to play out in our society today?
Taye O: They are the trending Artists. It is really disturbing because they are not helping the youth achieving any good mortals than adding more the problems to the society.
BGM: Is there certain genre of music you would advise parents not to let their children listen to?
Taye O: Hip Hop Music.
BGM: So how would you advise the general public to handle the kind of music they allow young children who will eventually grow into adult to listen to?
Taye O: My advice is the parents is prevent their chilfrom from listening to trending music and focus on music that will help in training them in the ways of the Lord.
BGM: Thanks for gracing the show tonight @TayeOlusola it was thought provoking and a great learning opportunity. God bless you and your journey in music.
Taye O: Thank you Blecyn for the opportunity.
