Celebrate how far you’ve come

Dear 25 year old me, I have something to share with you:

Recently I came across a blog post where Richard Branson was challenged to write a letter to his 25 year old self. I was instantly intrigued. I am a huge fan of Richard Branson, his philosophy on life and business, as well as his drive, transparency and humbleness. What brilliant advice would he have to share?

Opening his letter was like opening a Christmas present, I was excited and a little shy. It was thoughtful, encouraging and straight-forward. Richard shares his brilliance on failure, the humble beginnings of entrepreneurship and taking chances.

I was immediately inspired to write my own letter, to my 25 year old self.

Dear Lisa,

Relax, I know you want everything yesterday but you’ll need to be patient. You need to grow into the person that will be able to handle the success coming to you. Grow, read, meet interesting people, try things on, go back to school and travel.

He’s not the one, you’ll have to kiss a few more frogs before your prince comes along. Cherish your girlfriends.

Don’t be in a hurry, you’ll miss all the juiciness. Pay attention, your purpose is calling you.

Stop trying to make people understand, they are not there yet and they are not your people. Like your prince, your people will also come along.

Stop brushing off your accomplishments, you’re allowed to celebrate your wins. It’s not ego, it’s grace.

And most of all, if you only remember one thing from this letter, I want you to give yourself permission. Give yourself permission to be everything you can be. It is in this permission that you will find your purpose.

I love you,

Your 50 year old self.
