Beware of Fake Crypto Ads: How Google Ads Facilitated a Phishing Scam

Google Ads has come under scrutiny for inadvertently promoting a fake cryptocurrency website, leading users into a sophisticated phishing scam. A recent report by BleepingComputer highlights how cybercriminals leveraged Google’s advertising platform to pose as Whales Market, a legitimate over-the-counter (OTC) crypto platform known for facilitating airdropped token trading.

The deceptive ad, which appeared at the top of Google search results as a sponsored link, redirected users to a counterfeit domain designed to mimic the real Whales Market website. Once on the site, users were encouraged to link their digital wallets, at which point malicious scripts would activate, draining cryptocurrency from the wallets.

This scam underscores the increasing use of reputable ad services like Google Ads by threat actors to propagate their fraudulent schemes. Despite Google’s rigorous ad monitoring systems, the fake site went unnoticed, allowing the phishing campaign to gain traction.

In response to this and similar incidents, Google has initiated legal action against identified scammers, such as Yunfeng Sun and Hongnam Cheung from China, who were implicated in utilizing the Google Play store for fake crypto investments.
