Gig Review: My Nu Leng, Flava D & Zinc

Adjusted Audio / Alternate — Outlook Festival Launch Party. Zeus, Reading.

So this was my 3rd gig at Zeus Bar in Reading and I was really looking forward to it. In the past year, I’ve become a big fan of My Nu Leng, and when I found out he was playing in Reading I had to get a ticket. Luckily, because I was such an eager beaver, I managed to get early bird tickets for £5!! Zinc was the headline act, but I’ve seen him before so I wasn’t as excited. Flava D was also on the line up, but I hadn’t heard about her much before the event.
My Nu Leng was on first at 12am. We were still outside queing at that time! The queue was ridiculous. We didn’t expect it atall, as usually we just walk straight in. The club was rammed inside and out (as they have a garden terrace with a DJ booth too). Anyway, we only missed the first 5mins of his set and headed straight to the dance floor. My Nu Leng was joined by a MC. It worked well as the style Mu Nu Leng plays compliments the MCing (usually im not the biggest fan of MC’s!). His performance style, as like his production style, is a mixture of Hip-Hop and Grime infused House music. Personally it’s my favourite type of House music. He was only on for an hour, but managed to squeeze in all his popular tracks and plenty of bangers. He was really getting into the vibe and it was entertaining to watch. It felt like he wasn’t ready to finish after an hour!
Next on was Flava D. Her set was similar to My Nu Leng as she plays the same genre (and actually played a track My Nu Leng had already played). She was only on for an hour also, but I really enjoyed her set! She played the tracks everyone wanted to hear. Mostly current stuff, but not too new. It worked well following My Nu Leng. I’d like to see her play again.
Then the headline act Zinc came on at 2am. He started with some really cool house tracks and his most recent singles. House is Zinc’s music that I prefer because not long after he begain his Drum n’ Bass set….Safe to say, i am not a fan of Drum n’ Bass. But it was clear 70% of the people there, were there to see the DnB side of Zinc’s set. The crowd were going in!! Needless to say, I stayed untill the end of his set as it was entertaining to watch everyone’s dancing (well, I say dancing…).
Overall, I really enjoyed the structure of the night. I’ve always been a bit doubtful of 1 hour sets but it worked surprisingly well. Kept the night fresh and it zoomed by! The choice of acts to play was spot on! I hope Adjusted Audio & Alternate organise another gig just as good soon as I will deffinately be attending.
