How to Use BuzzSumo to Find New Blog Post Ideas

Every blogger has the moment. You’ve been pumping out new posts on your blog, then suddenly you hit a wall.

You sit around thinking to yourself, what should I write about next?

I have the problem more often than I’d like to admit. Once I find an idea for a new post, everything starts to flow together and I’ll churn out content quick.

But I spend a decent amount of time sitting around trying to generate ideas. Simply put, that’s time wasted.

The goal is to minimize wasted time and find new inspiration for awesome content. One tool that I like to use is BuzzSumo. With BuzzSumo I can find the content in my niche that has gone viral, and piggyback off of the trends that are getting so much attention. There’s nothing more inspirational than seeing a piece of content related to your niche that’s gotten 60,000+ shares. It can really get your creative juices flowing.

A Bit of Info About BuzzSumo

BuzzSumo allows you to search for content that has the highest number of social shares, also known as viral content.

Social sharing is one of the best measures of user engagement. It’s a key metric that bloggers and SEOs try to maximize.

That’s why BuzzSumo is so effective. It allows users to discover the most viral content in their niche. It’s an inside look at the content that your audience finds most engaging.

How I use BuzzSumo

I have a really simple process for finding content ideas on BuzzSumo. I start with my main keyword for my niche. Let’s use the hoverboard niche for this example. I’ll type that keyword into the search bar on BuzzSumo.

This will return the most shared content related to that keyword. I have a healthy list of articles/videos/etc. to go through for inspiration.

Find ciral content on BuzzSumo

I have the option to filter results based on content type, but I like to take everything into consideration. These results are great for getting post ideas. Even the off topic content lends creative inspiration. They give insight into the popular topics in my niche as they are becoming popular.

Things tend to move very fast on social media. If you can find a trend on social media you might be able to capitalize on it before your competition even realizes it’s a trend.

Once I’ve gone through this process for my main keyword, I’ll repeat it for all my other target keywords that I came up with during keyword research. This usually returns some really interesting content. I’ll filter through the blatantly off topic suggestions to find the content that I think my audience will engage with.

This usually helps me think up one or two unique posts each time I run through the process. On a day when I don’t feel like writing much, it often gives me the extra kick to get going.

BuzzSumo is also great for identifying the most influential figures in your niche. They’re getting the most shares on your topics, so they’re ideal people to connect with to spread awareness of your own brand.
