The Original Allman Brothers Band (back, from left) Duane and Gregg Allman: (front, from left) Butch Trucks, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley and Jaimoe Johanson.

The Allman Brothers Band played a unique mix of blues, Southern rock, and good old-fashioned rock for six decades, from 1969 to 2014. The actual story of Duane and Gregg Allman and their group of happy addicts who were also musical geniuses is much more tragic than “they wrote ‘Ramblin’ Man’ and ‘Melissa’ and they’re awesome for it.”

There were many other bands besides the Allman Brothers who did drugs and lived the rock star life to the fullest. But they lived a life of drugs and money that not many bands could even dream of. If you told a Hollywood studio about their real-life problems, they’d probably turn you down because they were too unrealistic.
