Violet Sorrengail’s journey is carried on in Rebecca Yarros’ “Iron Flame”, as she makes her way through her second year at Basgiath War College. Following the gripping events of the previous novel, Violet is drawn farther into more complex military and political disputes.

In addition to assisting the revolutionary forces in their fight against the venin and wyvern dangers, Violet is returning to Basgiath to complete her training as a dragon rider. She struggles with concealment and finds it difficult to fully rely on even her closest companions as she goes on perilous expeditions to learn the secrets of the wards guarding their realm.

Violet has several obstacles to overcome in a year. An elixir used in training missions that momentarily breaks the tie between riders and their dragons is one of the strange discoveries at Basgiath. The cadets’ capacity to employ their signet powers is hampered by this. The hospital also keeps a secret: Jack Barlowe, who Violet had assumed was dead, has been revived and has returned with an entirely new personality. At one point, he even saved Violet’s life.

An important player in the revolution, Xaden, keeps up his effort to arm gryphon fliers. He is trying to forge strong daggers, but he needs a luminary — a unique object that can increase dragonfire — to do it. After discovering vital information about the kingdom’s wards through her research in the Archives, Violet is forced to face a number of allies and adversaries, including Dain, who acknowledges his part in previous betrayals.

In an attempt to obtain information about building and powering wardstones, Violet and her pals go on a perilous journey to acquire journals from the royal vault, which escalates tensions. Violet is captured and tortured by Major Varrish as a result of this mission; however, she barely escapes thanks to her squad and an unexpected display of valor by Dain.

Violet and her allies try to train new recruits and fortify the fortifications in Aretia, the revolutionary stronghold. Violet deciphers the journals and makes an unsuccessful attempt to raise a new wardstone despite obstacles. Her resolve is strengthened when her dragon, Andarna, emerges from Dreamless Sleep, albeit not without difficulties.

When Violet learns that the actual combat is about to take place at Basgiath, the book reaches its climax. When Jack Barlowe — now a venin — destroys the wardstone guarding Navarre, a major wyvern attack follows. There is chaos and brutality in the battle, which involves gryphons and dragons. Violet’s mother gives her life in a last-ditch effort to save the realm, enabling a fresh wardstone that successfully fends off the wyvern attack.

Violet sees indications that Xaden may have turned venin, implying that his survival in the fight came at a high personal cost. This puts the book’s conclusion on a grim note. “Iron Flame” keeps the high stakes and furious action that fans of the series have been accustomed to, while also developing character relationships and expanding the world-building.
