How May I Help You?
In case you are a manager, don’t ever forget that you always have to tell your subordinates “I can help you”, and really mean it.
This is your role. This is what your people see in you. Period.
A leader is supposed to lead, not sit in his corner office and take all the credits when things go well, and blame the subordinates when things go wrong.
In real life, it should be exactly the opposite.
If things go wrong is his fault, but if they go well is the team’s merit and should be appreciated accordingly. Of course, the boss has to make sure that he (she) hires, trains and motivates the people, keeping in mind that he(she) is just doing his(hers) job.
You are there to help your people, it’s not their job to help you. If you do this, you have a greater chance that they’d do the same for internal and external clients.
„When you’re GOOD at something, you’ll tell everyone. When you’re GREAT at something, they’ll tell you.”
If in the end, you’d realize that the employee won’t, or can’t make it, it’s your duty to help them leave. Most certainly the person is not cut out for the job and will not bring a significant input to either the team or the company.
Don’t forget that if your team is not performing well, sooner or later, you will suffer the consequences. You won’t always be able to blame others!
At the end of the day, it’s your duty to make things work, not come up with an explanation why they didn’t. Now that we’ve settled your role, do some (gym) exercises using this question:
How may I help YOU? — it is recommended to keep repeating the question a few times every day until you grow the muscle and it becomes the second nature.
