WHY?
In light of the presidential election, we have heard a lot of different point of views that have been made on immigration. We hear candidates talk about laws or policy that they think will be the best for the United States. These laws or policies that might pass could affect us all because we all know at least one person that is an immigrant. Whether it be a relative or a friend. That is why it is important for us to know what our future presidents have in store for immigrants.
Purpose?
For me personally, I do not have an opinion on this topic. The reason I say this is because I do not know the full intentions of the candidates. As the election goes on, views have changed on immigration. Without knowing exactly what the candidates say and how they want to proceed with the law or policy I cannot agree or disagree. So I would like to learn more about what they are saying and how they intend to follow through after the law or policy has passed. I hope by the end of these blog post that everyone who has read about it understands fully on the topic of immigration.
Some Policies :
One presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, has voiced her opinion on immigration. In the article on NYTimes, “Hillary Clinton Takes Sides on Immigration”, written by Juliet Lapidos, Hillary states “I support the President’s decision to begin fixing our broken immigration system and focus finite resources on deporting felons rather than families.” So if Hillary is elected, like Obama she would try and make sure that children are not being deported only criminals are. Not only can this help reduce crime rates but it can also decrease incarceration rates. I think this is a good solution if you believe in the punishment of deportation. This is also a good solution if you have agreed with what Obama has been doing the past years during his terms.
An opposing presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has also voiced his opinion a lot on immigration. For the most part, he is widely known because of his views on immigration. In the article “Explaining What Donald Trump Wants to Do Now on Immigration” the author, Julia Preston says that “As president, he said, he would issue an order immediately empowering enforcement agencies to be aggressive in hunting down immigrants with criminal records and speeding their deportation.” This tells us that if Donald Trump is elected, he will try and deport people who are illegal immigrants and has a criminal record. This is something President Obama has been doing but has been more discreet about. This is also kind of similar to what Hillary wants to do but is more polite and less aggressive about compared to Donald Trump.
Reflect :
In a way, both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton plan on deporting criminals if they are elected. The differences are that Hillary would continue to do what Obama has been doing while Donald Trump would have a more aggressive approach. Which presidential candidate do you agree with?
