The Handmaid’s Tale is not for everyone — it’s a heavy-handed take on a dystopian future that takes a deep dive into a world completely driven by classism, racism, and entitlement under the guise of piousness.

It’s explicit and hard to watch, but if you have the stomach, it’s incredibly smart, important, and intentional.

It’s also deeply misunderstood by many who refuse to look beyond their own self-serving context. While the story of The Handmaid’s Tale is fictional, the actual roots of the story are real and important in helping us understand its telling.

While we are a few major world disasters away from being in actual danger of such an absurd turn of events, you cannot truly understand The Handmaid’s Tale without looking at the context of the world we currently live in.
