70 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At this year’s Frankfurter Buchmesse (10–14 October 2018) we are using the occasion of this anniversary to raise awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the values it upholds. The German Publishers and Booksellers Association and Frankfurter Buchmesse have joined together with ARTE, ZDF and DER SPIEGEL with support of the United Nations (UN) and Amnesty International to create the a campaign WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE. We are celebrating this anniversary and joining forces to demonstrate how important it is nowadays to defend these universal rights. More info >>

Ariel Burger: Witness: Lessons from Elie Wiesel’s Classroom.

Elie Wiesel’s legacy as a moral leader of the world is well known. His fearlessness as a witness to the horrors of the Holocaust and his leadership in condemning current crimes against humanity make understanding his values and thought process an invaluable asset for the world.

Although many know him as a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Professor Wiesel had a long career as an educator as well, especially at Boston University and he would often say that he wanted to be remembered as a teacher. In Witness, Ariel Burger turns us all into Elie Wiesel’s students, as he shares his memories as Wiesel’s student, assistant and friend, in this beautiful memoir about the master teacher.

This important contribution to the literature of pedagogy, an effective tool in counteracting Holocaust denial, also fulfills the Talmud’s dictum that a lesson taught with humor is a lesson retained.

Readers will enjoy this book so much, they might not even realize how much they’re learning from it. Bravo.

Ruth Westheimer, better known as Dr. Ruth, is a German-born, Jewish immigrant to the United States who became a fixture in late-night television and a major pop culture figure as a sex therapist, media personality, and author. Ariel Burger: Witness: Lessons from Elie Wiesel’s Classroom.
