To learn more about the relationship between John Steinbeck and Monterey, you can find it in John’s book, “Travels With Charlie”. Here he outlines how he was not welcome in his hometown. He recounts going back once and visiting a bar where he still had a few friends. He even received death threats. His book, “The Grapes of Wrath” and several others, targeted those abusing workers, such as he had seen in his Salinas area. The local ag. industry still wants nothing to do with him, although he is at the same time a huge draw for the tourist industry there.
