Yield Prediction for all Mankind: Part III

Jan 28, 2016 · 2 min read

Creating predictions for other high-value crops is key to keep innovating and growing toward our ultimate goal. Currently, models are being created at Vinsight for almonds, walnuts, strawberries and hops. We see these crops as being widely grown in California and the world but little is done about accurately knowing the yield before harvest. Vinsight will have models for every widely grown commodity in the world by 2021. We aim to be the world’s source for crop commodity supply. To help accomplish this, accurate ground data needs to improve and historical trends need to be better understood. Currently, most countries do not have the infrastructure or data sources widely available to contribute to these models. More to come on this topic in other post; stay tuned.

Closed Loop System

The process of yield prediction will ultimately become a closed loop system where everything about a field is understood from the soil, to the crop variety, to how the field is irrigated. Parameters such as these will be adjusted to optimize the harvest so the best possible crop is yielded. This is needed to secure the world’s food supply.
