Gail receives joy by giving back

When Gail started to volunteer at The Bowery Mission, she was looking for a way to impact women in the New York City area. She had a background in computers and thought she could share her knowledge with women trying to find work.

Over the years, as Gail has applied her skills to serving guests at the Mission, she’s given more than her knowledge. She’s given her heart! And the return is quite rewarding.

“Today, as I help to pair mentors with women in the life transformation program, I get energized by what I see,” Gail shares. “When a young woman says, ‘Oh, I love my mentor’, or a mentor says, ‘I’m so thankful for the woman I’m paired with,’ it’s very fulfilling.”

“And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.”
 — Isaiah 58:10

“The great thing about volunteering at The Bowery Mission is there are a variety of ways to help,” Gail adds. “If someone wants to help behind-the-scenes, they can. If they want more interaction with guests, those opportunities are available. Even stepping in to help with meal service can open the door to other possibilities.”

We’re always welcoming new volunteers! Visit www.bowery.org/volunteer or email volunteer@bowery.org to learn more about this exciting way to give back.
