The roles of impassioned, engaged moderators can’t be overemphasized in Reddit’s success as a community. There is no set of algorithms or policies that that can replace the value of dedicated human curation of posts for the purposes of maintaining a particular culture.

And moderation is not a task for the faint of heart: when half of a Reddit community claims that the mods are tyrants and the other half claims that they are negligent, that’s a sign that the right balance has been struck.
