I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a single “social media expert” who actually has any understanding of social media at all, with the obvious exception of Gary V.
I feel like saying “I’m a social media expert” is just a new form of hiding from the work you’re actually supposed to be doing. I.e. instead of writing a new book or recording a new podcast or filming a new Youtube video, people are retweeting each other and spinning their wheels while saying “I’m building an audience.”
Then I look at how Gary V gained his audience and I see years and years of engaging wine videos, then some great social media books, and now a shitload of great social media advice videos filmed after having already proved he could do social media effectively.
AND I see honest engagement with his fans on social media.
There are lots of 22 year olds out there who want to make a name for themselves by talking about How To Do Social Media. In other words, there are a lot of copycats stealing Gary’s ideas and selling them to their own little niches rather than becoming competent in their own field.
