The Espresso Express Lane

My mission to help Seattle small business and beyond.

For those that live, work or play in the coffee capitol of the world, coffee is more than a commodity beverage or quick pick-me-up. Seattle’s baristas are more knowledgeable and passionate. The roasters are of higher quality using only the most premium ingredients. The competition is fierce.

Any daily coffee consumer spoiled for choice with premium coffees and service, should be happy… So why wasn’t I?

Everyone Else Loves My Shop

Every coffee drinker in a three block radius waits in the line at Zeitgeist Coffee. Peak morning hours or an afternoon surge create huge backups on a daily basis. Sometimes we just don’t have the time or patience to wait in any line. Haven’t you walked away from a favorite before because of the wait?

On rare occasions I would go to the neighboring Tully’s or Starbucks where the wait wasn’t so long. Those felt different though. I just wanted Zeitgeist.

Why The Long Line?

Surveying showed that other coffee drinkers felt the same. Many responded that they would pay extra to avoid the register. This is the most frustrating part of any purchase process for consumers. What is SO hard about:

  1. Providing my order
  2. Paying
  3. Receiving my order

While it’s true that these are the 3 crucial steps to any purchasing process, watch the other side of the counter closely. The register is rarely the true bottle neck in coffee production… coffee production is.

However, a 12oz drip order makes its way to my hand while I am still in line. I am now waiting to pay for a drink I have already ordered and already received. This makes drip coffee different from custom coffee orders.

So much so that they don’t belong in the same queue.

Enter The Express Lane

Think of your typical supermarket “12 items or less” express lane. Now apply the concept to time. All orders with prep time of ~12 seconds or less do NOT belong in the same queue as time intensive custom orders. The same concept applies to minute long coffee orders vs. 5 minute food orders during the lunch rush.

If an order takes significantly less time and effort to fulfill than other menu items, it belongs in its own “express lane.” Many shops have enough space for only one register though.

Enter PressDash

The solution:

Create a mobile “express lane” app for customers and vendors.

How it works:

  1. Customers preorder using PressDash.
  2. Baristas are notified of orders to fulfill.
  3. Customers are notified when their order is ready.
  4. PressDash automagically pays (similar to Uber).
  5. Customers then “Dash” past the register straight to pickup (and bliss).

The core values:

Stay fast, simple & effective for a better experience on BOTH sides of the counter. We want customers to be happier with their favorite order in hand. We also want to let merchants perform their craft and fulfill more orders.

About the PressDash Project

PressDash is being created with assistance and feedback from independently owned Seattle coffee shops and coffee drinkers. However, the potential applications for the online express lane are limitless.

Try it out for yourself. We’re building for you.
