The Real National Security Threat

Look inside your home and examine your neighbors

Lincoln said “a house divided cannot stand” as a warning. Putin said “a house divided cannot stand” with intent.

Our democracy was hijacked by a hostile foreign power on the cheap. They knew that it would be easier than creating The Manchurian Candidate or hacking electronic ballots. And they could do it honestly and in the open.

If it wasn’t clear before, it should be now:

  • Our racial anxiety and racist grievances are a national security threat.
  • Our fear of our neighbors and our xenophobia is a national security threat.
  • Our poverty and inequality is a national security threat.
  • Our poor health and education is a national security threat.
  • Our reliance on and the embrace of white supremacy is a national security threat.
  • Our love of things and not people is a national security threat.
  • Our belief in the fantasy of the ‘self-made man’ is a national security threat.
  • Our belief that ‘personal responsibility’ absolves us of our duty to others is national security threat.
  • Our self-segregation and self-isolation is a national security threat.
  • Our political gridlock and partisan divide is a national security threat.
  • Our focus on ‘what I can do for me’ instead of ‘what we can do together’ is a national security threat.

We let ourselves be divided by a hostile foreign power. We did it by selecting and amplifying only the stories we want to believe, that validate — but never challenge — who we think we are.

We hold the walls of this house up together. But we’ve lowered one hand to point the finger at who’s more to blame. These walls are weak and crumbling. If we don’t figure this out soon, it’s all going to come crashing down and we’ll all be caught in the rubble.
