Uneventful Weekend (Day 9/Day 10)
Let’s just say I miss America! I am tired of Ghanaian food. I want some pizza, buffalo wings, a nice long island followed by a pedicure, soak off, and full set.
This weekend has been pretty boring, weekends are set for volunteers to travel but since Simone left and there are no other volunteers I did not want to travel alone. Every tourists’ excursion is far away and you literally have to drive more than an hour away. Being bored by yourself on a different continent from all your family, friends, and associates is really something else. My mother and second mother (sister) are currently having heart attacks and trying to buy me a flight to come back like right now but I should be fine.
So, I ‘ve been Netflix and chilling…so happy Netflix finally decided to work because Hulu, Starz, and OWN does not. I am ready for Monday, hopefully placement is interesting… I’ve actually never had a vacation by myself so this shall be interesting. My boring weekend became slightly un-boring…
Lucy decided she wanted to go out and chill because we had been in the house all day so she asked me if I was busy and if I wanted to go hang out with her and her friends (this occurred after she got permission from her finance). Who knew this was about to be an adventure. I assumed that we would take a cab somewhere but to my surprise we’re walking through the jungle (not really but I’m dramatic and that’s what it felt like). Let me remind you all that it gets pitch dark at 6:30 p.m. and we didn’t leave the house until 8 something. But you know, I am with the coordinator so I should be safe? So, we’re walking and walking…Lucy’s phone flashlight is leading the way because there are barely any street lights. We’ve adventured through a whole field and all (sorry sis, I know you’re reading this worriedly but I am fine). Lucy decided that we had enough of walking so we caught a cab, THANK GOD! So, we meet her one male friend for a drink…
Let’s back track because I forgot to tell you that one day Simone wanted to go to the neighborhood bar, Maryland, so we went and asked what did they suggest to drink. This bar had no chasers…no water, juice, NOTHING! But the bartender, I guess that’s what we’re going to call her, suggested Joy Dadi Bitters. We then realized we should start planning our funeral once the lady gave us back so much change, we thought that a Smirnoff wine cooler and shot cost 12 Cedi but it really was 6 Cedi and the shot was 1 Cedi. Do y’all understand how much money that is in American Dollars? $0.23! TWENTY-THREE CENTS, that’s it. Simone asked if I was going to drink the shot with her, I told her I could take a tiny sip or put my tongue in it but I am not drinking death. Guess what it tasted like…warm ear wax. Now you may ask, why do I know what that taste like but I really don’t. I would just assume that’s what it tastes like.
Fast forwarding back to today, we went to a bar similar to this one, so I ordered what I knew. A wine cooler! Lucy asked me if I wanted to try some cow and I proceeded to say no thank you but she orders it anyway. I have no idea what part of the cow this is but I could not chew it and it was so damn tough. I literally spit it out. We began to converse about the differences within Ghana & America and the ups and downs within my trip.
I noticed that everyone’s reaction to me being single is mouth dropping. They always ask why and do not understand. Long story short Lucy is in the process of trying to get married since I am graduating soon. She tells her friend (his name is Phillip) to bring all of his attractive friends so they can audition and I make my final cut (lmao). Phillip then proceeds to say the finest man is seating and the table. Lucy burst out laughing and told him numerous of times that he is not cute or hot and that he need to get that into his mind (this is the first time I’ve heard anything mean from a Ghanaian). They start talking in their language and then switch back to English as she says set it up…ummmm yea.
So, Lucy was over the atmosphere (people were watching MMA fights on an overhead projector, this is like the second time I have seen a form of television since being here). She wanted to go to a bar called Mirage that was supposedly up the street. We proceed to walk on this dark street with not one light, I proclaimed that if we were in America this would be considered very dangerous and unsafe, I then asked her if we were okay. Lucy reassured me that it was safe and Ghanaians walk all night. So, we’re marching and marching, there’s no bar. I asked if we were going the right way, she said she thinks so. Philip proceeds to call Lucy and ask where did we go. They get to talking in their language and next thing I know Lucy grabs my hand and we start running onto ongoing traffic. The entire time I have no idea what is going on because where is your English words. She said Philip said this street is dangerous and the men will rob you (stealing your phone). Have you ever seen a deer caught in headlights? That was us, we could not see if the car was a tax or regular vehicle. Thank God it was a taxi! So, we finally arrived at Mirage, we stayed for like all of 10 minutes and caught a taxi back home. This bar was so not down the street from where we were smh we would have been walking for forever! Emmanuel was up waiting for us before locking down the house, no more dummy missions with Lucy.
As I thought my night was ending, my sister called so I began talking to her and preparing for bed. I walk into the bathroom to find two lizards on the wall! So, for those of you who may not know me very well, I do not do bugs, lizards, creepy itchy crawly creatures of any sort so I began to scream for Emmanuel. Emmanuel took a whole 60 seconds to get upstairs 😐I really was about to have a myocardial infarction! Emmanuel banging and spraying, I had to close him in the bathroom because those things were not about to come into my room. He killed them with his bare feet, I CANNOT! I have never been so enthused to tuck myself in my little net and bed.
