This has nothing to do with “democracy”. Poland wants enjoy the benefits of the EU, which include NATO protection against Russia, tariff fee access to European trade, etc. But the right wing party in power does not want to pay the costs of joining the EU, which include flooding its country with millions of refugees, who do not care about Poland, just like Germany, and destroying its middle class with debt for austerity programs, like Greece, or letting the EU regulate how Poland can exploit its natural resources. By centralizing power, the ruling right wing PiS party wants to shut out any corruptible political opposition groups that the EU can bribe into pushing these policies on Poland. At first they will use toned down Ukrainian “Maidan” methods to topple the PiS, but they will probably just end up stabbing Poland in the back with a coup, just like what happened to South Vietnam’s Diem in 1963 after he pissed too many people off. Also, you can think of it like what happened to Czechoslovakia in 1968 when the government decided to “reform”. This time, however, the response is going eastward, instead of westward. I think it will be much more violent, as well. What for the counter-demonstrators, it will be rather nasty. But hopefully I am all wrong. Brian Ghilliotti
