Painting Misconceptions. Jedi Mind Tricks. Learning Curves.

Do you think you are pro now?

So, one the coolest aspects of painting is how much we can change our user-experience by changing the products we use. For example, the paint brush. If we spent the last 5 or 10 years as a professional, painting with the same paint brush, we are not likely to be aware of how other paint brushes can change our level of experience.

Do you think you are a pro now? If so, how would you feel if you leveled-up?

We may have mastered our favorite paint brush and witnessed the brushes capabilities at the maximum level. We think we are pro. We also think, so is our brush. We defend our buying decisions to the core and justify our purchases based on what we can accomplish. We tend to avoid switching brushes or products because we think we’ve mastered the product.

The brush works fine, why change it? The reality is, we may have mastered one product, or one brush, and maybe its time to move on to something else now.

Paint products have the capacity to keep us at a constant level of production. That level of production is entirely based on previous experiences. It is compared to something else in our minds. Maybe our current brush is twice as good as our previous brush. Maybe another brush is twice as good as our current brush. But, where exactly does this level of production fall on the production-o-meter? It is not until we try other products that we realize production can be increased. Production can be better, we can do more in an 8-hour day.

I’m glad I took the time to create the video, “How to paint a room in 6 minutes.” What the video does is, it demonstrates the power of great products working together in the hands of years of experience. In other words, the video shows what is possible when the skills we’ve acquired over the years are injected with new product capabilities to maximize efficiency.

It is absolutely foolish to think if I swapped the paint brush or roller cover in the video that I would be able to reproduce the same room in 6 minutes. In fact, if I used some of the popular mainstream brushes used on YouTube by other painters, I would be willing to bet my results will look very much like their results. Some products are just a pain in the ass to use and they keep us from reaching our full potential.
