Global Entrepreneurship Week — World’s largest celebration for startups
Globally linked — locally engaged
This week we had the pleasure of visiting the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) in Maastricht. As a sponsor of this event, it was exciting for us to see startups, investors, coaches and students gather in entrepreneurial spirit! The full-week event had everything you could ask for: seminars, workshops, market and exhibitions, award ceremonies, startup competitions, networking possibilities and much more. Event highlights? Here they come.
Global Entrepreneurship Week is an annual global initiative, though organized locally in 160 countries. In the Netherlands alone, there are more than 100 events during the third week of November. We sponsored and exhibited at the event in Maastricht. With the theme being #iamchange, GEW Maastricht ’16, organized by Maastricht Centre for Entrepreneurship (MC4E), focuses on the change entrepreneurs make. People from all backgrounds, nationalities and fields gather to inspire and be inspired.
At Brightlands Innovation Factory, we support entrepreneurs on a global as well as local scales. This means that events like GEW’16 that promote entrepreneurial thinking and exchange are the perfect opportunity to support the local ecosystem.
Additionally, we were very proud to see three of our Alumni present at the exhibition. TopologX and Green Minerals, formerly known as Innovation Concepts, joined forces to exhibit a CO2 neutral 3D-printing innovation at GEW’16. Rementis, also one of our BIFINCS16 program participants, presented its own invention — a multi-media device assisting people suffering from dementia to be able to stay at home longer. Rementis also competed in the startup pitch competition and it is with great pleasure that we can announce that they won!
In addition to our program participants, the presence of companies like Inspiratiehuis, HomeHandi, Starters Valley, LaunchBase and many others made it very valuable for entrepreneurs to visit the event at Centre Céramique in Maastricht.

Alongside the startup market and pitch competition, the starting entrepreneurs got inspired by seminars, workshops and evening talks by speakers who were once in their shoes. Right now, they are known as founders of viable companies, which is of course also what the current entrepreneurs and startups aspire to be.
Giving the entrepreneurs information and insights was not the only objective during this week. The entrepreneurs were also challenged to get involved in several ways. Through innovation challenges and a variety of workshops, they were challenged to use their talents and creativity.
All in all, we would like to compliment the enthusiastic, international team from MC4E on the organization of the event. The Global Entrepreneurship Week 2016 was a great success and certainly a valuable event for entrepreneurs from all disciplines and nationalities. We, as Brightlands Innovation Factory, are proud to be sponsoring this inspiring event and we get great energy from seeing motivated entrepreneurs with a passion for what they do!
