My father had a slight propensity for this kind of divisiveness with his daughters, but he held himself in check when others were watching.
I’ve seen that glee though, and I was never more disappointed in him when I did.
He was in emotional pain all his life with a side order of sadistic narcissicism. He used the telephone, too. Maybe even the party line at the farm before it got switched over in the late 70’s. (We had a ‘weekend farm’ — a non-working farm where we would spend weekends and summers).
But even with my adult understanding of some of his psychological issues, I still don’t understand the payoff he was getting. Why sow hatred amongst his daughters? Did he really just want others to feel the anger and hatred that was so much a part of his life? Maybe parts of us never grow up.

I love this story. I love how you told it and I love how much I can relate to it.
Thanks.
