Day 12: Public Perception

Check out Artificial Design on Deviant Art!

This is how the world at large things of and affects my characters. Again, thanks to Michael A. Stackpole’s 21 Days to a Novel.

Georgina

Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim. My inspiration for Gina.

Techy

Even in a world entirely reliant and saturated with technology, the ones who design and build technology have a tendency to be loaners. Equally, software designers tend to be men, where as biotech tends to be the realm of women. No one really knows why this is the case, although there are lots of social theories on the subject. Overall, though, George (as she goes professionally to negate this issue) is a bit of an outlier.

Alt-looking

Having said that, her always-colourful hair, piercings and retro-style clothes makes her one of the ‘alternative’ crowd. People assume she is promiscuous and sexually adventurous, anarchistic and something of a prize to have as a friend or lover.

Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Bilingual communities are the norm in Missicity; born as it was from the melting pot of American immigration almost a millennium ago. Spanish does not hold the working-class connotations it once did; quite the opposite in fact. Bilingual programmers are massively sought after by corporations and individuals alike for products servicing both those communities and communities worldwide.

Indie Work

It’s seen as rather divergent to work independently of the job-placement system, although as an ASchool graduate she has more opportunities as an independent. To many people, this makes her untrustworthy to many corporate-types and those uncomfortable working outside the strict guidelines of ‘The System’.

Indie Home

Being a member of an Independent Housing Society isn’t all that rare, but neither is it the path recommended by the System as most people know it. People living in indie homes are assumed to have something to hide; be it political leanings, sexual perversions or criminal activities.

Poly Household

Although modern society is much more flexible in terms of relationship types, pair-bonding still tends to be the norm amongst the people on the ground floor, with more complicated combinations left to those with the time and money to enjoy it.

Gina doesn’t talk about her living situation much outside of the house itself, but if she does, she describes herself as ‘available’ rather than ‘single’. It just makes life easier in the long run. She doesn’t often take people home for reasons of space and complications.

The Perks of polyamory.

Russell

Andrew Garfield/Russell

Young & Skinny

With the looks of a lanky little boy, Rus is seen as inexperienced and naive. It’s hard for Russell to make his voice heard amongst more experienced and cynical people.

Manual Background to ASchool Profession

Rus doesn’t talk about his background much, but it comes out in the way he pronounces his As.

Some people born into academic households might look down on him as being somehow lesser, while Manual households see him ‘putting on airs’ now he’s placed in white-collar work.

Journalist

Journalism is seen as quite a privileged profession by the manual classes, involving little work and a lot of travel/vacation time. On the other hand, more politically savvy types see it as a career that serves the corporations, and little higher than the manuals used to fill out the private police forces.

‘Pirate’ journalists are illegal, so he has to be very careful about who he mentions that to lest he wants to be under the auspices of those same police forces. Some see them as criminals, some as vigilantes, others still as heroes. Best to keep these things to himself just in case.

Romantically Inexperienced (in a Poly Household)

The folks in the House see Russell as a bit of an innocent. Their reactions vary from dying to ‘break him in’ to wanting to let him discover things at his own pace. All of them consider their alternative living situation as a privilage of being in an Indie Society. Very few (Percy being one of them) see it as something that has to be borne.

Percy

Trying on Gerard Butler for Percy (was previously Hugh Jackman).

Approaching 50

50 isn’t really considered old anymore, but Percy makes a point of not getting any prosthetics. His body is natural and kept in good shape by an obsessively healthy diet and constant exercise — particularly running. This is considered weird by society at large, as ‘natural’ is entirely out of fashion these days.

Percy isn’t a big fan of the ‘free love’ thing. He just finds it entirely too tactile and codependent. He likes to get on with his own thing. He has a couple of lovers and frak buddies around the city, but hasn’t pair-bonded since a bad experience in his 20s.

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
