The original Belfast Castle was situated in the centre of Belfast, and was built by the Normans in the 12th century, by 1700 it was the home of the Chichester family. However, the original building burned down in 1708. The Chichesters duly relocated to the suburbs of Belfast, rebuilding their castle in the Victorian style in the early 1800s. It is set on the slopes of Cavehill Country Park 400 feet above sea level. Its location provides unobstructed views of the city of Belfast and Belfast Loug.

Since 1988 it has been a popular venue for weddings, conferences and other events.
