There’s an excellent book, written a couple of decades ago, about how to cover Wall St. Unfortunately, I can’t pull the name right now, but I believe the author’s first name is Phillip. Look for articles on the IRE website about beat reporting for financial topics and I’m sure you’ll find some worthwhile information there that should be relevant to what you’re looking for. Stock analysts are, indeed, “investigative reporters” in their own right. If you’ve ever seen the movie “The Big Short” you’ll see how the main characters dig into the numbers, actually go and interview those who are investing in these dicey financial instruments, conduct interviews … all good tools that a top-notch investigative reporter would employ.
