New startups appear not only every week but, perhaps, even every day. According to crunchbase.com 8, 706 companies were registered since January the 1st 2016. Some of them have failed, whereas, others have become successful. Anyway, there are lots of fields that have a great potential and offer many possibilities to the entrepreneurs. Here is the list of industries we recommend you to look closely at in 2017.

Virtual reality

People have always been excited by the idea of VR. And finally, this idea has become real. Let’s remember Facebook, Google, HTC and Samsung that have brought much to its development in 2016. Experts believe that the tendency won’t change in the coming year. This year we’ve already seen gloves and handheld controls apps experimenting with VR and in the coming year, we expect the development of apps for touch and smell.

There have been lots of rumors that Apple is developing something new and outstanding in VR to be released in 2017. Well, maybe these are just gossips but it may also prove that Apple will make a real breakthrough in VR.

Experts agree on the idea that the price for VR gadgets will become more affordable in 2017. For example, Microsoft and Intel announced that they are aiming to create VR-capable PCs for middle-income customers. Well, let’s hope that next year Santa will bring us some VR gadget under the Christmas tree.

Augmented reality

Just like VR augmented reality is one of the top niches that will develop in 2017. Nowadays, most AR technologies run on Android. However, an increasing interest to AR makes us think that the number of companies willing to take part in its development will double in 2017. A great success of Pokemon GO in 2016 showed an IT world that AR can be profitable and help the companies attract a large number of users.

Like in the case with VR, we can’t but remember that Facebook, HTC and Microsoft already have their share in the market. It’s also expected that Apple will launch AR devices in 2017.

Chatbot startups

Understanding a human language is a hard task and major companies all over the world are ready to spend millions of dollars on solving it. One of the solutions to this problem was the creation of chatbots. These bots can be either a separate application or live inside the program, like Slack or Facebook (FB implemented chatbot in their Messenger. However, it’s not frequently used).

It’s believed that the future of chatbots is, first of all, in customer service. That means that the customer will be able to ask a question to a chatbot and get almost an instant answer. There is a huge number of applications for chatbots and many of them are to be released in coming years.

2017 is expected to become a flowering year of messengers for chatbots. And while Facebook will remain the main messaging platform, other companies like WhatsApp and WeChat will definitely bring something new to the sphere.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning

Artificial intelligence and machine learning can be found in every list of 2017 startup trends. It was placed in the first place in the list the top 10 strategic technology trends for 2017 created by Gartner, and it’s not surprising. What was just a dream only a few years ago, will become a reality in the coming years. 2016 gave the world self-driven cars and drones and it’s only a beginning. Of course, we can’t expect that AI and machine learning will completely change our life in 2017 but it is quite possible that machines will be able to diagnose the diseases and perform easy financial transactions for the customers.

Even this year we have seen a battle between Google, Microsoft, and IBM in an attempt to enhance their machine learning algorithm. It’s estimated that among 100 young startups, about 90 are going to use machine learning to bring a better service to their customers.

Cyber Security

For the last decade, the number of identity thefts has increased dramatically. Despite the warning, most of the users deny changing their passwords and username as well as continue using the same credential for various websites. Many steps have already been taken for protecting people from their accounts thefts. In 2016 we’ve noticed that ID verification methods and biometrics have been adopted by various companies. So, what should we expect in 2017?

It’s anticipated that about $ 1 trillion will be spent on cybersecurity from 2017 to 2021. Certain steps will definitely be made towards mobile security, as attacks on mobile devices are continuing to grow.

Massive attacks on IoT in 2016 showed the vulnerability of the system. Thus we can assume that more and more steps will be taken to solve the problem. As the companies will start looking for new ways of protection, machine learning will be used in a wider range. One of the main problems that cyber security faces is a lack of specialists, so the number of unemployed workers in the coming year will remain the same as in 2016–0%.

The cloud

Cloud computing has improved the work of companies in the last five years. And it is anticipated it will face a new growth in 2017. The main trend will be big companies with big data that will use the cloud as an extremely comfortable place to run their main business applications.

Public cloud will gain more and more popularity in comparison with the private cloud as the companies will understand how time and money consuming it is. Accordingly, more and more companies will switch to using Hybrid Cloud that will decrease costs and increase effectiveness.

Marijuana

The business of producing marijuana is growing and with its legalization in 26 states and the District of Columbia, the industry will definitely continue to grow.

As the industry itself is rather new, we can foresee that it will require lots of various apps and, probably, even social networkings. Correspondingly, there will be a necessity in software developers experienced in this sphere.

Of course, it’s not a comprehensive list of the industries that are expected to bloom in the coming year. As the technologies appear and develop so quickly there can be something that will burst into IT sphere and revolutionize it. Well, 2016 is coming to an end and there is no much time left to wait until we see all these changes with our own eyes. For now, let’s decorate our Christmas tree, buy presents and get ready for the holidays.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone! Hope to see you in 2017 in our company with your marijuana startup! ;)

With love and best wishes
