Commute by Bike This Winter

Don’t let the foul weather keep you from reaping the benefits of riding.

First, it doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t necessarily need a special bike or a bunch of special gear to have a successful commute. Keep it simple and use common sense for the most part.

  1. Dress like you normally would…In layers. You’ll be burning energy during your ride so you definitely won’t freeze. It may take some time to adjust, just do what feels right for you. If you run hot, wear less layer. Run cold, wear less.
  2. Protect your extremities. Wear gloves and thick socks as these are the places most likely to feel the cold first. Also, be sure to wear a thin hat under your helmet and if it’s particularly cold cover your face.
  3. Invest in bike fenders. If you want to keep clean and dry it would be a good idea to put a fender on your wheels, at least the back one. If it’s not really an issue to get your coat a bit wet, then forget it.
  4. Stay visible. Since the days are shortly, it may already be dark during your evening commute. Wear reflective clothing and possibly use a set of lights so that you will be seen.

Great benefits of continuing to commute this winter include keeping those holiday pounds at bay, boosting your mood and boosting your immune system. Riding your bike to work will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the day. Go out and enjoy!
