Burger King Ghost Pepper Chicken Nuggets ad.

Fast food seems to be swapping from the chicken sandwich wars to the chicken nugget wars. Popeyes recently released their long-awaited chicken nuggets. It’s actually amazing to me that Popeyes allowed burger joints to be years ahead of them in offering chicken nuggets. However, there’s no time like the present. Now that Popeyes is onboard, Burger King is looking to pull out in front of them with their Ghost Pepper Chicken Nuggets.

You can check out my review on Popeyes Chicken Nuggets here.

Burger King’s Ghost Pepper Chicken Nuggets are only available for a limited time. Of course, they are. The limited-edition causes impulsiveness to make you want to get them before it’s too late. But before you rush out to grab an eight-piece — because you know a four-piece isn’t going to be enough —let’s see what’s inside of these nuggets.

Burger King describes these spicy nuggets as such: “Limited Time Only. Made with white meat chicken kicked up with fiery ghost pepper, our Ghost Pepper Chicken Nuggets are the perfect balance between flavor and heat.”

Ok, ok. Sounds good, but are they good for you? Short answer is “no,” but let’s see how ungood they are.

Burger King’s eight-piece Ghost Pepper Chicken Nuggets have 407 calories. You may be thinking, “Big deal” right? But, when we drop down to the sodium levels, it becomes a King-sized deal. There is 904mg of sodium in the order of those nuggets. And that’s just the nuggets. If you make it a meal with small classic fries, that sodium increases to 1,633. If you have high blood pressure, you’ve just exceeded your daily limit of salt in that one meal.

There are 27.6 grams of fat, and 22.3 grams of carbs. The carbs are from that bleached white flour that is used to coat the chicken. Somehow it still managed to have 1.7 grams of fiber. That’s a bit of a conundrum. I had expected >1g fiber. Go figure.

To put this into perspective, an eight-piece Ghost Pepper Chicken Nugget meal has more calories, fat, and sodium than some burrito bowls at Chipotle — which are healthier and more filling.

We get this one life to live, and the way we feed ourselves is a key factor in how our overall quality of life will be. I greet you all in peace. Be well.
