Social Media, Yup. You need it.

There was once a time when to get a word out was managed by the paper boy standing along the sides of the streets. He’d hold out the paper and you would pay a few cents to get your copy of the daily word. This time has passed. There was also a time of the amazing email marketing. Sending promotional emails with deals, coupons, and just about anything to get the word to as many people. This is still happening today, but we’re quickly starting to move away from such old methods of getting the word out about what you’re doing or your new bakery shop. But something remained constant from those old forms. Something amazing. If and only if your ad was really sweet would people start to talk about it. And that thing that remained constant throughout history and now, is word-of-mouth advertising. And that still is very important today but it is captured in a different way…a better way. Social Media.

Leaving The Nest

So, you have this wonderful idea and you don’t really know what to do from there. You've spoken with a few of your friends about it and they really love it! Assuming this is true, you have found a true need in a market. As the great robot in Robots said “See a need, Fill a need”. And that’s what you’re on your way to do. But how? you’re not to certain on who to tell your idea to help you move it forward, do you even want to pursue it further? If you said yes. Then keep reading. Now, not just any idea is something to dive in and go crazy with because it stuck with you for a day. It has to be something that you think about all the time, day and night it’s on your mind.

Entrepreneurship: For great rewards, Comes great sacrifice.

I can remember back when I first started my entrepreneurial journey. It was about 12 years ago when I started experiencing being one. It was in elementary school when some friends and I caught wind of a trend that was taking place among younger students in our school. They loved these little bracelet things and would really pay money for all the different kinds. So some friends and I started to look more into what they would spend on these bracelets. Some of the younger students would spend in the upward of 20 bucks! It was insane really. My friends and I found out where the students were buying these from and then went to buy some for ourselves, a “stock” of them if you will. We sold them for higher than we brought them. Made some really good money actually. That was until administration caught wind of our operation and shut us down. Thus, we were introduced to the life of entrepreneurship.

Connections: It’s not what you know, But who you know.

Meeting people has always been a plus in life for us, even before our startup people just seem to always bring value into your life in many ways. But there’s something special about having that key person to come into your life to help push an idea from the idea phase to a working model or an introduction to someone else who can help do so. But in business there is a phrase to live by, and all the greats do. “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” This statement is very true and can take your startup from ground level to being one of the most successful companies around. Think for a moment now.

Critical Mass: The best did it. And so must you.

In our startup (Little Brown Box Works) we've always thought that the hardest part of running everything was us actually building a product. Now, don’t get me wrong, it had its challenges and we didn't come short of ours (speaking with our developers, layouts and storyboarding). All very time consuming things but much needed. We thought the hardest part was over when we finally had finished our story boarding process. Not…the…slightest. We came to understand what the harder part of running a startup was truly, and that was us getting our name out to the masses.

Content: It’s very important. When it’s done right.

There’s a saying by the great Gary V (You should look him up) and it goes “Content is king, but context is God (from a social networking point of view). We but only recently started to understand the impact in which content for your brand being important. We always knew to post a picture here and there on social media about the things we’re doing on a daily bases. But we had to master the understanding of true content. Really having good content. Getting our followers engaged in what we’re doing and getting them to understand our mission. But you might be asking, well, what exactly is content? Isn’t it just pictures of stuff? Well, yea, but it goes into a little more depth than that.

Pitching: Practice makes perfect…Or something like it.

You know, repetition is the father of learning. Something we know a little bit too much of. Or not. When in a startup, you start to realize one key thing you’re going to have to do…and that’s pitching. Now, not every single startup out there will need to, but for us it is something we do almost religiously. Recently we went to a pitch prep event here at our office, The Co//ab. We went in with a game plan. We knew exactly what we would go in and pitch to the “coaches”.

Snow Days : Rain, Sleet, or Snow we grow.

Many people hate these snow days…we do too. Personally, I feel as though it hinders business in so many ways. People want to cancel meetings, People don’t want to get up and out, your favorite food spots are closed, and just everything! Snow days are really just a pain…like rain…A perfect example of this would be this week. We had lots of entrepreneurial events scheduled to attend and already two of them were cancelled. To me, the conditions were good enough to allow them to happen but I guess others didn’t feel that way. Don’t get me wrong. The snow is fun and really can be entertaining. With snow ball fights and sledding being a thing here in North Carolina how can one argue?
