Happy Birthday Cy Twombly

Happy birthday to one of the key figures in 20th century art, Cy Twombly!

Twombly, belonging to the generation of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, was known for freely-scribbled, calligraphic and graffiti-like works.

His creations reflected the ancient Greco-Roman past that surrounded him in his chosen home in Rome. Many works were inspired by the mythology, history, and places where Twombly traveled.

In both the content and process of his art, Twombly was interested in the layering of time and history. His art situates itself in the context of the history of Western civilization as well as the process-oriented aspects of Abstract Expressionism.

Today, Twombly’s works are in the permanent collections of modern art museums, including the Menil Collection in Houston, the Tate Modern in London, New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Munich’s Museum Brandhorst.
