Burnham Wood School District Follows Coordinated School Health Model

The Burnham Wood Charter School District in El Paso, Texas, offers a rigorous curriculum that integrates studies in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts. In order to maintain its commitment to promoting the health and wellness of its students, the Burnham Charter School District adheres to the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) Model for Coordinated School Health.
The Coordinated School Health (CSH) Model acts as a communication guide between schools and parents and lays the foundation for promoting the well-being of young people in schools. Developed by the CDC in the late 1980s, CSH features eight components: health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, staff health promotion, healthy school environment, family and community involvement, and counseling, psychological, and social services.
The CSH Model removes health-related barriers to learning and encourages the systematic involvement of families, health care workers, community organizations, religious organizations, and adolescents. Among the program’s goals are instilling healthy eating habits in students, giving them continuous opportunities to practice healthy habits, and maintaining consistent messages that promote healthy eating.
