Who or what is a “Butler”?

As far as we know in our Singaporean context, Butlers are “Atas” domestic workers that only the rich can afford. They wear suits, draws a very high salary, and have a perfect English accent. ( Yea..Why are they all British by the way? )

It seems that in Singapore, not many around us do have a Butler, hence we are more influenced by the media on how butlers are perceived, how they behave and speak. We end up stereotyping on how a Butler should be.

How are Butlers different from Maids?

“A Maid cleans stuff and do what she’s told while a Butler gets you stuff to manage your home.”

I believe we have heard this saying at least once and if this is the first time you are seeing this, there are 2 reactions that we could expect.
“Oh yea… not bad a analogy”
“Not really, my maid gets me stuff too.”

Well, none of these reactions are wrong, but let’s paint this picture a bit clearer shall we?

5 main differences between a Maid and Butler

Maid — “Your best friend when no one is around”

  • She is employed to perform household and domestic chores, ensuring a clean environment for your home.
  • FDWs (Foreign Domestic Workers) are only allowed to work for you. She MUST NOT be deployed to work
for anyone else or asked to help out in your businesses.
  • With the vast amount of maid hiring agencies in Singapore, you’ll definitely be spoilt for choices.
  • An experienced maid can earn from $550 — $800 / month (depending on the employer), and after accounting for living expenses, they’ll cost around 1.2k-1.5k easily.
  • Trained in agencies or ACTA-certified trainers.

Butler — “The guy I cannot afford or dream to hire…”

  • His or her role is being the manager of the household. Your personal manager.
  • A Butler has the ability to train employees and other servants to run the household. He or she can be deployed to wherever they are instructed to go, as long as it is registered under your name.
  • There are only 3 hotels in Singapore that has full time Butlers. Raffles Hotel, St Regis and Shangri La Hotel.
  • An experienced Butler can earn up to $6,000 SGD/ month in a household. (No way!)
  • Butlers are trained in renowned and established schools and academies to ensure professionalism. Interesting, Shatec Institutes (SHA) in Singapore offers a Butler-training programme!

Still, I will never be able to afford Butler services! I would love to, but hiring a maid is cheaper.

Is that necessarily true? Can we really live such lavish lifestyle at an affordable price in Singapore?
Are our Singaporeans ready to accept this kind of new idea?
