What To Look For At The First Intra-Squad Scrimmage

So if you didn’t know, the Bergen Catholic Crusaders will be having their first “public” scrimmage of the season tomorrow at 10AM EST, at Crusader Stadium.

There will be tons of things to look for. On top of the scrimmage, Bergen will be having their annual BBQ afterwards, but more on the scrimmage. Tomorrow we will get our first look at how the team’s progress is really coming along as a whole from last season. What in particular should we look for?

Line Quality

Without a doubt, Bergen lost the most starters and quality players this past season on both lines. With possibly 3–4 new starters on both sides, things will be interesting. This will be our first look at how the defensive line looks as a whole and they will have a tough task against running back Josh McKenzie. The offensive line definitely has a lot more size than last season, but we will see tomorrow how they work as a cohesive unit.

New QB Behind Center

A new QB always changes things up. Junior QB Johnny Langan did start some games last season, but with another offseason under his belt and now with him as the full-time starter, he will have looked to improve. Langan possesses good athletic ability and a great arm. Tomorrow we will look to see strides in how he manages the offense, improvement in accuracy and decision-making. The offensive weapons will be much different than last year, so it will be interesting to see how he and the wideouts have molded together.

Development Of Youth

Like previously mentioned in this article but in others as well, this team features a lot of youth. Intra-squad scrimmages are great because not only do we get to see where the starters are at, but how the fringe and back up players are as well. There is only room for 22 starters at the varsity level but one of the most important things in football is depth. Tomorrow we hope to see a lot of Sophomores and Juniors having solid roles and making an impact off the bench as a sub.

I know it’s just an intra-squad scrimmage, but I am very excited for tomorrow. I will be live-tweeting the event as the day goes on and will have follow up articles afterwards as well. Also expect to see some awesome photos.
