Christina, Thank you for your comment and your article responding to my article and also the unprecedented 2/20 #Justice4Liang protest by the Chinese American Community across the nation. I respect and appreciate different viewpoints! But I am afraid you may have misread my article entirely. As being “accused of being a Liang sympathizer” by your article, I am actually more sympathetic towards Gurley (who has lost his life through no fault of his own) than Liang (who has made serious mistakes) in this tragedy. So let’s get that air of misunderstanding cleared out of the way first, OK? However, the legal case here is about Liang. So I focused my analysis on the legal aspects of the case: 1. Is this tragedy a criminal case? 2. And if yes, does the punishment fit the “crime”? You see I did not even mention the racial identity of Gurley and Liang in this part of the discussion (Justice or “Rule of Law” should be color blind). But since the prosecutor (and some politicians) seems to have some political motivation in this case, I then asked my third question: 3. Does racial politics play a role in this case the way this case is playing out? And I did not profess to know the right answer to this very troubling question(s). (And if anyone should think there is no racial politics in our society, he or she is sadly mistaken.)
Actually, I don’t have a racial political axe to grind here. I am Chinese American, my wife is Caucasian, our kids are of mixed race, and we have friends of all races, including African American friends. And I am a big fan of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. So in this article, I am only focusing on the facts and the extenuating circumstances AND the logic or the lack of in this legal case. And my concern is that beyond the thorny on-going racial issue/politics in our society, by mixing racial politics and Justice together, we are threatening the Rule of Law in this country, and that could become a fatal “cancer” for our country eventually.
Thank you Christina, and I do respect and appreciate your opinions even though they may be different from mine. But I want to clarify my key points/arguments here so that they are not being misunderstood.
Very respectfully,
Byron
