Meet Torsten Koehler, 53-year-old, CEO & Founder of the Love Your Nuts Foundation and former teacher, vice principal and graphic designer based in Cape Town, South Africa. He is also a testicular cancer survivor.
While preparing a sex education lesson in 1995 for his 5th graders, he came across a chapter on diseases in a children’s book and a sentence that read: “Testicular cancer is most common between 15 and 40.” It prompted him to self-check — and he found a lump.
His journey of survival started by “openly confronting his thoughts and emotions, relating the reactions of his friends, family and not least, his students, who gave him enormous help and hope.”
While his cancer journey was tough and emotionally painful, he’s now supporting other guys on their testicular cancer journey through his foundation. He says he’s got the best job in the world: “Talking balls and saving lives!” His motivation to start this foundation was inspired by a former student who thanked him for making him mindful of testicular cancer during one of his awareness sessions. The student had testicular cancer and discovered it before it spread.
Torsten’s advice to other men is to live a balanced life and look after your health. And obviously, check your nuts for lumps once a month! He says, “Knowledge and early detection is the best weapon against cancer!”
Thank you for sharing your story, Torsten, and for working every day to educate young men, truly making a difference and saving lives! Follow him on Instagram and Twitter @loveyournuts and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/loveyournuts — and don’t forget to self check!
