Building Injury Resistant Runners

I had the pleasure of promoting the benefits of running to several hundred Deloitte employees at their annual well-being fair this morning. From improving cardiovascular function to enhancing brainpower, we know that running is a magical means to drastically improve health and wellness. Unfortunately, runners are also experiencing lots of musculoskeletal injuries, with the majority of research indicating annual injury rates in excess of 50 percent.

Do you find it strange that technique/form are a regular part of instruction in most sports and exercise, but runners just lace up their shoes and log their miles? Perhaps there wasn’t initially a need to teach such a natural movement, but modern lifestyle has significantly altered our movement patterns. Today, we need to focus on optimizing our posture and learning efficient running form.

I refuse to accept that running is just hard on our body and injuries are a normal part of the game. I believe that optimizing running technique will lower injury rates and boost performance. As the executive director of CARA, I am blessed with the opportunity to enhance the running experience of thousands of Chicagoland runners. So CARA community, please open your minds to optimizing your running form this summer as we work together to build injury resistant runners.

Come run with us!
