Capital campaigns in the UK higher education sector

Many UK HE institutions have developed and successfully run major capital campaigns, securing billions of pounds in donations for the UK HE sector. The success and support received in these capital campaigns illustrates the value of HE fundraising activities and the manner in which individuals (mainly alumni) perceive this type of fundraising and the impact that their contributions have to students and the society.

According to the Ross-CASE 2014–15 data, 15 institutions are currently in campaign with an approximate collective campaign goal of £5.78b. Ten institutions recently completed successful campaigns and secured approximately £3b.

From additional sector figures we can estimate that 18 institutions are running capital campaigns with a collective campaign target of £5.9b (£1b of which can be attributed to 16 institutions excluding Oxbridge). A total of £8.9b in philanthropic income has been or is being secured across institutions in the UK.

ONGOING CAMPAIGNS:

1. University of Oxford — Oxford Thinking

Goal: £3 billion

Amount secured: £2.075 billion as of December 2015

2. University of Cambridge — Dear World … Yours, Cambridge

Goal: £2 billion

Amount secured: £525 million as of October 2015

3. University of Nottingham — Impact: The Nottingham Campaign

Goal: £200 million

Secured to date: £194 million as of June 2016

4. University of St. Andrews — The Campaign: 600th Anniversary

Goal: £100 million

Amount secured: £70 million as of July 2016

5. University of Leeds — Making a World of Difference Campaign

Initial goal: £60 million, reached in 2015, after which a revised goal of £100 million by 2020 was announced

6. University of Sussex — Making the Future 50th Anniversary Campaign

Goal: £50 million

Secured to date: According to the website, 75 percent of the target has been achieved
