Day 2

There is plenty of beauty on today’s run. The shadows are long but the light is pure. The air is soft but the wind is bracing. Along at the bottom of Scott Blvd dried prairie grass and the brittle stalks if last year’s coneflowers are edged in the golden glow of the setting sun. Two red tails circle above us on weak late afternoon thermals and as we depart of family of deer hightails it — quiet literally — down the hill before us.

What’s not to love, especially surrounded as we are by our teammates? But love without communication means nothing. Like the cranes fighting Himalayan tempests to gain passage over Everest, we’ve got to let each other know we are in this together.

Or, as Kelly McGonigal puts it, “When you are feeling stressed, one of the best things you can do is help someone else.”

And the girls put theory in to practice. After a first few tentative attempts, the pack actually tightens. The front markers are the same but behind them a new girl steps forward to cover the gap. Hands reach back and words of encouragement float over shoulders.
