Success is not linear — neither is progress. Most people aren’t going to PR or set SBs every meet (unless maybe you are Rebecca Rethwisch circa 2009). It’s easy to get wrapped up in the numbers but we’ve got to keep the forest (our body of work) in sight through the trees (the individual results).

There is no inherent value in covering 1500m in less then 5:00. Meters and minutes are both arbitrary measurements we use to talk about the abstractions of time and distance.

The true value is found in the pursuit not the procurement of our goals. It comes from the thousands upon millions of seconds that go into striding toward it — the choices, commitments and connections made along the way — and not the 299 seconds of attaining it. Or as an alum once wrote:

It’s not about the Drake flag. It’s about the friendships forged in its pursuit.

Friday night was by no means the PR parade we saw at West High and honestly, on Wednesday I could have predicted we might run a little flat. But running is all about delayed gratification. The work we put in over the last 10 will hopefully begin to manifest itself next week — if the coach isn’t a total noob.
