What is lacking here is something so fundamental I cannot believe it’s not being discussed.
A seven year old does not have the intellectual capacity to make any judgment calls when it comes to the use of guns just as she does not yet have the ability to make judgment calls with regards to the use of an automobile.
To this little girl…she is playing with a toy. She has no idea that those five simple shots had the ability to kill someone.
We as parents have an absolute responsibility when it comes to teaching our children what responsibility is. I see a father teaching a whole lot of safety but never addressing why that safety is so very important. So what this little girl learns is that shooting is “fun” so what gets cemented in her mind is the connection and fun she had with her dad…not the grave responsibility she must maintain as a gun user.
It’s incredibly important to couple such important lessons with the facts. Guns kill people…whether by accident or on purpose. That fact was underscored here. The use of guns was glorified in the eyes of an impressionable bright young girl…and that does more harm than good if you ask me.
