Beginning July 1, newlyweds will receive a two hundred dollar voucher care for marriage counseling services. Courtesy of the federal government and the tax payers of the country, the initiative is intended to provide couples with the skills to manage relationships effectively thus creating a stable and positive environment for children to grow up in.
The subsidy is available to couples who are already in a relationship, this includes same-sex couples, and couples who intend to tie the knot. According to the Chair of Relationships, Australia’s National Board, Mat Rowell, there is proof that couples and families who have gone through counseling are better equipped to handle the ups and downs that come with being in a relationship.
A budget of twenty million dollars has been set aside for the program’s initial run. Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews said the progress of the program will be reviewed annually to determine its viability. In accordance with the earlier statement of Rowell about the benefit of psychology courses for couples and families, Andrews further revealed that counseling not only improves relationships but makes it stronger for five years.
Sadly, statistics from counseling revealed alarming figures that the majority of marriages in Australia wind up in divorce. Estimates indicate that the cost to the country of marriages breaking down amount to six billion dollars. Latest figures also revealed an increase in the number of divorce cases during the first month of the year by up to fifty percent. The main reasons for divorce according to experts are due to difficulty from financial tensions brought about by expenses incurred during the holidays. Add to this the strain of a family get together at the same time, eventually leads to serious talks of separation.
In answer to this rising predicament, the government hopes to enforce preventive actions like the marriage counseling voucher to dissuade the breakdown of families and relationships.
Expectedly, there are those who are unhappy with the government’s intention of having taxpayers foot the bill. However, marriage counselors believe the program would be helpful in strengthening relationships especially for the first few years.
