The Myth of Objective Game Journalism
Jay Allen

Well, there technically is a review site that tried to do ‘objective’ reviews:

Which kind of shows the issue with the concept. They’re less reviews and more bullet point summaries of the games discussed.

However, I will mention that games criticism isn’t just art criticism. Games criticism is complicated because games as a concept are pretty complicated to evaluate.

Why? Because a game has to be both a technically solid product in the same sense as a PC or washing machine and an artistic one at the same time. Nothing in a film or TV show or book can stop you watching or reading to the end of the story. But if a game is broken and its physics don’t work properly or the level design is so utterly unfair it’s unplayable, then in some objective sense it’s a bad product regardless of any artistic ‘merit’.

Just a few thoughts here.
