I think there are a lot of variations on Proof of Stake that have yet to be fully explored with Delegated Proof of Stake being only one of the most recent. I think is is possible that we could see a Proof of Stake developed where it would require having control over 50% of the currency before you could gain effective control over the forging process. Since cryptocurrencies tend to be much more elestic to supply and demand than hashing power if you tried to gain control over 50% of Ethereum or Bitcoin you would see the price rise at a much faster rate making it even more difficult to gain control over than PoW.
