Ruth stars in the highly anticipated ‘Electric Dreams’ episode -‘Human Is’.

RUTH BRADLEY is in awe of the sci-fi worlds she gets to explore as an actress. This time round, Ruth also gets to star alongside Bryan Cranston as an added bonus.

“There’s so many topics that can be explored under the sci-fi umbrella and it gives creators a license to explore issues in our society.”

Can you explain your character in ‘Human Is’ to us?

I play Yaro, who is Vera’s (played by Essie Davis) right hand woman and she works for the state. But that’s all I can say — you’ll have to watch it to find out more.

How familiar were to Philip K. Dick’s work?

I had read The Man in The High Castle but I was more familiar with the many screen adaptations.

Did you read some in preparation for the role?

I sure did. I read the short stories on which the series is based. Some of them are so short but he had an extraordinary ability to pack so many thought provoking ideas into such a short amount.

What is your process of ‘learning’ your character after you’ve read the script?

I read the script again and again. I make lists — the script is the bible. I read around the character, research away on tangents, then go back to the script. I over ‘learn’, then get to set and let it go.

“This piece, although sci-fi, is rooted in reality and deals with the themes of human nature”.

Were there any parallels between this project and your work on ‘Humans’?

I suppose there are. Like Humans, this piece, although sci-fi, is rooted in reality and deals with the themes of human nature.

Are you a big sci-fi fan?

Definitely! There are so many topics that can be explored under the sci-fi umbrella and it gives creators a license to explore issues in our society, which is really interesting.

What was it like to work alongside Bryan Cranston?

Just lovely! He is a true artist. He has a wonderful sense of fun and play and freedom. It’s infectious and creates a fantastic, creative environment in which to work.

If you could add some words to the end of the episode title ‘Human Is’, what would they be and why?

That’s an interesting one. Human is being compassionate. Or empathetic? Or kind? One of those, maybe.
