Hi Ali,
Thanks for the encouragement and thanks for reading along. I read through the post you linked and I enjoyed it. Just two pieces of advice:
- If possible, try to cut down the length of your posts. A 9 minute read, in actuality, is not a big time commitment. But, on the internet, 9 minutes feels like an eternity. Whenever I write something for Medium I try to make sure it’s no more than a 5–6 minute read. And even at 5–6 minutes it’s usually too long. I’ve found that posts in the 2–4 minute range generally perform better and get more attention because people are more likely to click on them (if that’s not what you’re shooting for, then disregard this advice)
- You picked some great quotes to include in your post, but I ultimately felt like they ended up taking away from your writing (especially the longer quotes/lyrics). Truth be told, I’m not a huge fan of including other people’s quotes in my writing precisely because I feel like they take away from my words and what I’m trying to say. But this one is entirely subjective and some people (many?) feel like the perfectly placed quote actually enhances their writing. To me anyway, there’s a certain flow to our words that’s very powerful, but if we’re constantly injecting someone else’s words in between our own, I feel like it disrupts our natural flow.
Just my 2 cents, but overall I enjoyed the piece you shared. Thanks again for reaching out and take care.
