Meagan, an interesting article. Someone close to me claimed Cherokee heritage, even naming a specific ancestor. Several years ago, he had extensive genetics testing performed on him as part of a medical research project. They found European origins, mostly, but also traced one ancestor back to sub-Saharan Africa. Genealogical research gathered by others also indicates that this ancestor was not native American, but of African descent. A descendant of this woman, her granddaughter in fact, once wrote that the family had claimed she was Cherokee to help her “pass” as white. I wonder how common this was.
