The Fight for Veterans Choice Continues
Iraq War veteran Chris Dorsey went into the Oakwood, Georgia, VA clinic to try to make an appointment to treat his post-traumatic stress, and decided to record his interaction with the staff there. Amazingly, he caught on tape the department brought into existence to serve America’s veterans denying him care.
This was no accident. Dorsey didn’t just record his experience based on a gut feeling that the VA staff would reject him. He recorded his interaction because he had been turned away at facilities before, but no one believed him. Dorsey is also spot on with his assumption that “If it’s happening to me, I can’t just be the only one.”
But what about the Veterans Choice Card Program? Isn’t this the sort of problem it was supposed to fix? In short, yes — it could and should help Dorsey get care elsewhere. But he can’t use the program if he doesn’t know about it.
What’s truly disheartening about this story is that it’s indicative of the red-tape and negligence our heroes are facing on a daily basis. Perhaps the issue is not that veterans don’t want to use the Choice Card Program, but that the VA doesn’t actually want to give veterans access to it.
