VA’s past mistakes still haunt veterans today
The VA is still failing to provide timely, quality care to our veterans. In fact, the immensity of the problems our veterans are facing at the department has substantially grown in the past few weeks:
• 847,822 — the number of veterans who filed health care applications that are still backlogged at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA)
• 307,000 — the number of veterans on the VHA wait list that are now deceased
• 117,136 — the number of medical malpractice occurrences reported in VA hospitals in Fiscal Year (FY) 2014, a seven-percent increase from FY2010; meanwhile investigations of such events decreased by 18 percent through the same period)
• 1 — In the midst of these massive scandals and shortcomings, we cannot forget that last all-important number — 1. That number represents the unique story solely attributed to every veteran across this country — real stories about real people with real lives and struggles.
The problem is simple: The VA’s benefits system is unequipped to handle veterans’ claims, and resists accountability when challenged for its lack of performance. The lack of competition has allowed the VA to take veterans for granted.
It’s time poor performing employees were held responsible for their actions at the VA and veterans got the care they deserve. To get involved in the fight for VA reform, join a local strike team, then follow CVA on Facebook and Twitter for more updates on the issues that matter to you!
