SAYHERNAME

I had once asked a child what she wanted to be when she grew up. I was thinking maybe a firefighter, maybe a teacher, maybe a doctor or maybe even a zookeeper.

But to my surprise the child answered me with one word

The word. had made my spine shake and quiver.

It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up straight into a fine line

It Made my heart shatter

It Made my eyes water

As she replied to be my question of what she wanted to be when she grew up was

alive.

The young girl’s trials will no doubt live, longer than she will.

She was just so young, she was just born but she can already tell me how she will die.

Because the hue of her skin.

because her skin is too rich

too concentrated because she doesn’t blend in nor fit in with society. She becomes a outlier. Her skin screams she is dangerous to the people in blue.

Dangerous like Sandra Bland

Dangerous like Korryin Gaines

Dangerous like the Rekia Boyd and

Dangerous like Aiyana Jones

Dangerous like you and I
